"BHIMA - LONE WARRIOR" - M.T. Vasudevan Nair

"The Secret" - Rhonda Byrne

This is supposed to be self help book and tells about how our thinking about something results in case of whether we get it or not. How we can alter our thought process from something negative to positive to attract the things we want. This book is a must Read. Even before reading this book, I have realized and experienced the power of thought to attract what we want. And I thought it worked with only me. But this book and contents reinforced my thoughts that it's applicable to all and everybody.

"A Thousand Splendid Suns" - Khaled Hosseini

I had read this long ago,so would not be able to give a detailed review. It's about girl called Mariam born in Afghan, her life struggles . She gets married to Rasheed, an abusive husband. Many years later, he gets married again to Laila. Mariam n laila get along later after intial conflicts. At end of novel, it feels like we really know all of the characters personally. The book is much more to than this and Mariam. Nice good fiction read.

"Alchemist" - Paul Coehlo

Alchemist:paulo coelho : this small book talks abt following your dream and achieving it. In this process the whole universe will conspire you. Its about young shepherd boy who wants to go around whole world. The book is full of invaluable piece of advice. So I consider this more as self improvement book than fiction or novel.

"VEDANTA OR THE SCIENCE OF REALITY" - K.A. KRISHNASWAMY IYER

I found this book very useful for those who are searching for the real essence of philosophy.  You will find here, most of the prominent theories of western scholars which are compared and weighed with eastern wisdom. Seiving the thoughts from Hegel to Schopenhauer; Spencer to Russell, Krishnaswamy Iyer, an ardent advocate of Shankara, brings out his insight and scholarship. The writing of ಪರಮಾರ್ಥ ಚಿಂತಾಮಣಿ, the magnamopus of Sachchidanandendra Saraswati was inspired by this book. As there are very few books like this, which rationally balances both the theories of  East and West on the topic, this book is recommended for deeper study and reflection.    ...it is not an easy reading.. says Dr. Radhakrishnan in his foreward.

I shall also try to provide link to the ebook.

"The Bachelor of Arts" - R K Narayan

Recently I read this social novel by RK Narayan published in 1937. Story is about the life of chandran: his college life, friends, first love, fate and family. More interesting for me was the detailing of the college life and it's clubs which seemed much different from today's happenings. Family customs, marriage proposal, horoscope , superstitions; all these can still be seen today & does not seem to have changed a lot even after ~100 years. The book gives a nice picture of people and life during those days. It was quite a relaxing and good read. The books that one can enjoy reading gets greatly restricted after reading SLB's book, but this book could keep me interested until I finished it. Guess many of you would have read it, for others "enjoy reading".

"Outlines of Indian Philosophy" - Prof M Hiriyanna

Prof Hiriyanna's writing is a reflection of the man himself- simple, lucid and profound . Even laypersons like me can understand, though we need to go through each line carefully , sometimes 2-3 times. . It is said of Hiriyanna- by DVG - in his essay- Hiiriyanna-An Appreciation- Hiriyanna was a man of few words. He never pushed himself forward. It took greatness indeed to recognise his work ..(Shri HY Sharada Prasad has translated DVG's Kannada essay into English and it is one essay in Art Experience.

"FROM SOCRATES TO SARTRE" - T.Z. Lavine

A handbook on Western philosophy .
This book is very useful to students of Indian  philosophy who wish to know about western streams of thought . It is neatly divided into different time frames of philosophers and has (1) Plato (2)Rene Descartes(3)Hume(4)Hegel(5)Marx(6)Jean Paul Sartre(7) The contemporary scene . Since many of our group members cited Philosophy as one of their interests .  I thought to share . The way the western world approaches philosophical studies  is very different from our So it is a good idea to read up this book.

"Sapiens - A Brief History of Humankind" - Yuval Noah Harari

This book is very good, on anthropology, possible evolutionary background on human behaviour and traits.
How most civilizations are similar in development and actions.
However, indian subcontinent is discussed very little, in fact the first mention of India is on the prevalence of casteism, which I felt depressing, and appalled how deep the negative portrayal of our country percolated in outsiders, thanks to commie congie historians.
Nevertheless, it's a must read for seekers of truth.

"Art Experience" - Prof M Hiriyanna

This series of writings of Acharya M Hiriyanna on Aesthetics in Philosophy is a MUST HAVE. Book in the collection of any book lover . Though a Kannada speaking Uluchukamme Brahmin from chikkanayakanahalli, he became one of Mysooru's most distinguished scholars, guiding even Dr. S Radhakrishnan . His self effacing , perfectionist nature did not get him or his works  the kind of celebrity that Dr Radhakrishnan gained . But that was his nature. ಅಚ್ಚುಕಟ್ಟುತನ in every aspect of his life .
Art Experience .   Tho Shatavadhani Dr R Ganesh sir has spoken so beautifully on this, and many in our group like Arjun Bharadwaj are working actively, I present a layperson's perspective.
To gain entry into Bharateeya Darshana, Samskriti and Manodharma, this book is a MUST read for all . The writing is in simple, easy English . Whether it is Art ( dance, music, painting, sculpture, literature etc) appreciation, or finding oneness with the Divine , there is always a purpose to human life, that is enjoyment of this God blessed ಮನುಷ್ಯ ಜನ್ಮ . Even through enjoyment of a good dish or a well made cinema, we can reach the state of bliss , equal to the detached ಆನಂದಾನುಭವ we get when in meditation or realising Brahman. Since realising Brahman is a difficult goal to achieve, Prof Hiriyanna demonstrates how beauty and aesthetic appreciation , ನಿಷ್ಕಾಮ ಕರ್ಮ, of our duties well performed, and striving for perfection in aesthetic pursuits gives the same ಆನಂದಾನುಭವ from ರಸಾಸ್ವಾದ . He explains with examples from Shankara to other philosophical schools to prove how aesthetics is evident all through our philosophies .. A must read for every layman, artiste, seeker of Truth.

"Exodus" - Leon Uris

This 600 page novel is set in the year 1946 and the main plot is about the Emigration of around 300 Jewish children from British run cramped barbed wire surrounded refugee camps in Cyprus to then Palestine in a ship called Exodus (From Wikipedia: In Bible Exodus is the story of the enslavement of the Israelites in ancient Egypt, their liberation through the hand of their deity and their wanderings in the wilderness up to the borders of Canaan)
This effort is orchestrated by the protagonist Ari Ben-Canaan with daring schemes to escape certain death from all corners
But the novel gets much deeper and beautifully narrates the bravery and struggle of Jews in the formation of modern state of Israel which they call “Promised Land”. The author Leon Uris takes the reader through a wonderful journey involving extensive flashbacks from the past which finally leads to the birth of a nation called Israel

Though a fiction, the author interweaves the story with lot of historical incidents which has come out of an extensive research.

The novel also talks about the early migration of Jews from Russia where they lost everything and had to literally walk to Palestine. These were the forefathers of formation of new Israel.

It details the atrocities caused on Jews during Holocaust, where thousands of Jews in Poland and Germany were starved or frozen to death in Ghetto camps. It talks about the “Final Solution” as Germans wanted a quick finish to the Jewish “Problem” through mass exterminations.
It talks in gruesome detail about the gas chambers. There were clean-up squads of inmates from Auschwitz. They emptied the gas chambers and removed the corpses to the crematoriums. Gold teeth were pulled and rings taken before the burnings. These would be melted down and sent to Berlin. Often a well-shaped skull would be taken for sale to the German guards as paperweights

Basically after Holocaust the Jews felt there was no place in the world they could call Home other than Israel. Jews from across the world migrated to the Promised Land.  The country was painstakingly built inch by inch, Kibbutz by Kibbutz (A kibbutz is a collective community in Israel that was traditionally based on agriculture).

Leon Uris also talks around the events which led to the declaration of independence for Israel by United Nations. They needed 2/3rd of support from United Nation countries, and they only had support of handful of countries to start with. What happened later is nothing short of a miracle. The author beautifully narrates this story. As Leon Uris puts it “After two thousand years, the State of Israel was reborn”. The Author takes us through the complete journey of Israel from practically nothing to one of the most of prominent countries in the world right in front of our eyes

But everything was not great for Israel after independence. None of the Arab nations (even till date) accepted Israel as an independent nation (except Egypt which did after the six day war)

Israel is less than 0.17% of the land mass of the Middle East which means it’s covered by more than 99% of nations which yearn for her destruction. At the time of independence, Israel’s population was less than a million and they were surrounded by 50 Million Arabs who vied for her blood. As author puts it “The Jews are outnumbered in soldiers forty to one, in population a hundred to one, in equipment a thousand to one, and in area five thousand to one”

Of course the Author is little partisan towards Israel/Jews, some sections would seem written very one-sided and some experts argue there are entirely not accurate, but this should not stop you from really enjoying the writing

Fortunately the Author does not take a pessimistic route and only talks gloom. The book is filled with the Perseverance, Hope, Courage, Hard work of the Jews and Miracle called Israel

The Characterization happens very nicely and you will feel very intimate with the characters

After reading the novel, you will be left with a plethora of emotions which range from anger, disgust, fear and sadness to joy, appreciation, satisfaction, encouragement and knowledge. The thoughts will linger in your mind for long time, days if not weeks. At places you will be shocked to bones and feel like someone punched you in the stomach and will make you wonder can humans be so cruel, can history to be so bad to one community/country. If you are like me, you will start searching in Google to check if the events in holocaust really happened and unfortunately they did. But Optimism takes over and you will be mesmerized by the turn of events and how Israel stands today as one of the most advanced countries in Technology, Security or Agriculture

As in Author’s words
Exodus is the story of the greatest miracle of our times, an event unparalleled in the history of mankind: the rebirth of a nation which had been dispersed 2,000 years before. It tells the story of the Jews coming back after centuries of abuse, indignities, torture, and murder to carve an oasis in the sand with guts and with blood....Exodus is about fighting people, people who do not apologize either for being born Jews or the right to live in human dignity
Hats off to Leon Uris for telling this story to the whole world and make everyone look at Israel with much more respect and look at its history in a new perspective.  The writing is very simple and engrossing and it’s worth every minute of reading

Epilogue 
About Exodus
Leon Uris (August 3, 1924 – June 21, 2003), spent a number of years doing research for Exodus, traveling 12,000 miles within Israel and interviewing 1,200 people. He nearly read 300 books
Exodus was translated to more than 25 languages
His books have been sold more than 150 million copies

"Bharatanatyabodhini" - Dr Manorama B N

Sharing the #review/#bookcriticism on #Bharatanatyabodhini book. Written by young scholar  Arjun Bharadwaj again which was published in different forums.
https://www.amazon.in/gp/product/B07XCJ8M1P/ref=cm_sw_r_fa_myi?m=A3HG32WFX0BNOM

Book is Available at Amazon now.

Today's aspiring #artists in general and dancers in particular are grappling with access to resources that deal with the basics of their respective forms of art, presented in an easily comprehensible manner. While honing #performance skills is one dimension of an artist, which is usually aimed at perfecting the grammar of the art form, a thorough understanding of #aesthetics, #classicalliterature, #arthistory and the life stories of artists of the past can enrich the content of the art form. A remarkable attempt in this direction has been made by Dr. BN Manorama, a thorough scholar of #classicalIndiandance and aesthetics with an insightful understanding of the underlying philosophy and aided by practical experience.

The work '#Bharata #Nāṭyabodhini' released on 12th August 2018 in Bangalore can act as a stepping stone in a dancer's career by laying strong foundation in the fundamentals of the #art form. The book is not only rendered in the Kannada language by the author, but is also accompanied by an English version, translated by Shalini P Vittal and Dr. Dwaritha Vishwanatha, both scholars and artists. The book has also been composed keeping in mind students who would like to appear for dance exams at different levels conducted by the #KarnatakaStateBoard, #GandharvaMandal and other nation-wide institutions. As mentioned by the author in the introductory essay, the outcome of the exam is merely a by-product of the process of going through the text. The bookitself is aimed at educating dancers about their own form of art, irrespective of their interest in appearing for the said #exams.

The book is a result of the deep #scholarship and thorough research of Dr. Manorama spanning over ten years. It is evident in the rich flow of content and clarity of concepts presented in ornate Kannada language, which is also translated into simple English for the benefit of the global audience. The book starts with the etymological derivations of the word #Abhinaya, and Bharata and also gives cultural connotations which are indivisible part of Indian ethos. An artist practising any form of Indian art cannot be successful unless he has a thorough understanding, an intuitive feeling and respect for the #culturalelements. This has been dealt in detail in the opening chapters of the book. The purpose of Art, its creation, the responsibilities of an artist, the features of a #dancer and the technical terms used are all described in detail by quoting from the original texts, mainly the #Natyasastra of Bharata and #AbhinayaDarpana of #Nandikesvara. Dr. Manorama's #research is intricately blended into the basics, in aspects such as identifying #nrtta, #nrtya and #natya and the evolution of the system of #adavus of #Bharatanatyam. The origin of different styles of Bharatanatyam in Karnataka and a bird's overview of the different genres of dance forms of India make the learning wholesome.

In the practical sections of the book, a detailed treatment of the yoga exercises is given as preliminary to #learningofdance. It is followed by the description of different kind of adavus, #hastas and the other aspects of #angikabhinaya along with the original verses, their meaning and application. The descriptions are aided by visual representation of the movements using line sketches. Natya, being a composite art form, the aspects of #vacika, #aharya and #sattvika abhinaya are also given detailed treatment. In addition to this, the book has chapters on the practical execution pattern of Bharatanatyam and defines the various aspects ranging from the #Pushpanjali to #Tillana. The chapters are organised by giving a timeline for the study of the contents and by dividing it into monthly modules to be covered progressively.

On even a preliminary glance through the book, one can easily say that it will not only nourish a person learning the dance form but will also educate a #connoisseur to make his #artappreciation deeper. In this sense, the book can be said to be #nartaka-#sahrdaya-siksartham. It does not stop there and also opens up avenues for possibilities of research to an inquisitive mind. Barring a few shortcomings in the design and the language, the book is a treasure. As Dr. Shobha Shashikumar (a dancer and #scholar par excellence) aptly points out in her foreword, the book does a tremendous job at blending together practise with theory. The systematic pedagogy presented only reminds us of the seminal work of Dr. #PadmaSubrahmaniam who rejuvenated the lost pedagogy and technique of the #classicalmarga as set by Bharata.

The book is optimally priced and we hope that all students and connoisseurs of dance put it to good use.

This books is a special study on aṣṭanāyikas where a detailed analysis of many primary Sanskrit texts has been done for every #nāyikā and the best definition has been identified.  The popular misconceptions attached to these nāyikās have been broken along with analysing their varieties and sub varieties. Their activities are enumerated and apt examples have been incorporated regarding how these nāyikās can be portrayed on stage. #Padams and #Javalis have been quoted wherever necessary and a detailed exposition about the suitable āhārya is also mentioned so that it is easier for the dancers to relate to. It is a deep insight on nāyikās with a practical touch of adapting it to dance. It is built on a set of propositions that don't just reaffirm what is already known, but also opens the door to ideas that are yet to be encountered.
We fondly hope our effort will be well received by the warm and zealous response of our esteemed readers.

Book Recommendation - By Anuradha Udayashankar

Namaste to all . Three favourite ( albeit English) authors I grew up reading were Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie and P.G . Wodehouse . I will take up P.G.Wodehouse as he was an American humor - writer, therefore with none of the subtle racism of the other two . Agatha Christie was the most racist writer, although her detective fiction held me spellbound.
Moving over to Wodehouse completely, I was introduced to his world of subtle charm and wit, by my late father Shri Subbanna, in my teens . He gifted me a Wodehouse omnibus .  But I shall stick to my favourite of all time, ' Uncle Fred in the Springtime'.
As an author, Wodehouse writes in his preface that- "I believe there are two ways of writing novels- one is mine- a sort of musical comedy without music, ignoring life altogether. The other is going deep down into life and not caring a damn' ..
In this classic Wodehouse novel . Lord Emsworth . Of Blandings castle calls in his brother, the bright, flippety Frederick, -- when he perceives a theft threat to his prize Sow- the Empress of Blandings  by his rival, the mad Duke of Dunstable...  What follows is a complete laugh riot, with characters like Pongo Twistleton,  Gussie Fink Nottle( whose hobby is collecting newts!!) Bertie Wooster and his man for all seasons, his Butler with the typical Brit " stiff upper lip" Jeeves . It's the subtle humor bordering sarcasm occasionally that has the reader in splits .  Cheerio

"Indica, A deep natural history Of the Indian Subcontinent" - Pranay Lal

Indica, A deep natural history Of the Indian Subcontinent" - Pranay Lal.

This book talks about the complex network of forests and how communication happens between trees. How trees collectively build a support structure, and even decide which trees flower and when. But gives a deeper meaning in each read!

The author Peter Wohllenben has spent over 20 years working in the forestry commission in Germany and has written many bookd on trees. He now runs an environment friendly woodland in Germany.
